First, the origin: “Here be dragons” is a phrase used to denote dangerous or unexplored territories, in imitation of the medieval practice of putting dragons, sea serpents and other mythological creatures in uncharted areas of maps. (thanks, Wikipedia)
I first came across this phrase, and its origins, reading a Sharon Kay Penman book of the same name. The concept has always stuck with me – both as a nifty trivia bon mot to drop when appropriate but also because of the concept of the unknown or hidden being scary. If it hasn’t been fully explored, charted and categorized then there must be unknown perils lying in wait. And also because I’m afraid of spiders – but more about that later.
